QotD: Pants on Fire

Tell us two truths and a lie about yourself.

Guess which is the lie!

  1. I enjoy reading about American history.
  2. My favorite food is spinach.
  3. I have only been to 5 bars in my entire life.

Because it’s the most unlikely of the three, I’ll say that #1- American History is the lie and #2 & #3 are true.

Can you quess my QotD?

Dear Kansas City:

Why must you dress so badly? Are we seriously a city where it is acceptable to run around in Fruit of the Loom sweatpants and sport flip flops for every errand we must run? I am all for a lazy day here and there but to always look like you have the flu and must run out to grab some OJ is a tad extreme! And the pajama pants in public! Can’t we even get dressed?
Since when did denim jeans become too dressy for the weekend? Heaven forbid a casual skirt or Dockers slacks be worn anywhere but work. Don’t we care enough about ourselves to get dressed before going out on errands for the day?
I remember when a night on the town in Kansas City had everyone looking sharp. Anymore if I wear slacks and heels to an evening comedy show I stick out in the crowd as badly as if I were wearing a formal to a movie theater. What’s the deal Kansas City? Show us you love yourselves! Show us some character! Leave the frumpy sweats at home!

I don’t get the PJ bottom thing either. If I’m feeling too lazy to walk back into the bedroom and put my jeans on, I probably have no business going anywhere. Someday people will figure this out. Until then, we will just have to hope they wear the cute Target PJs and not ratty old dad PJs.

That is awesome. I just adore this movie and this soundtrack. It never gets old. My mom used to sing Edelweiss to me every night and I have in turn sang it to my children. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever.

NY Times Story: My First Lesson In Motherhood

Guess I am feeling a little sentimental tonight because this story totally hit me hard. Perhaps it is because I have four children that I wouldn’t exchange for all the comforts and riches in the world; because I adopt every stray animal that comes near me; because every kid in the neighborhood that hangs out with our kids always end up at our house. No matter, this story from the NY Times is a good read…

My First Lesson in Motherhood

I SAW the scar the first time I changed Natalie’s diaper, just an hour after the orphanage director handed her to me in a hotel banquet room in Nanchang, a provincial capital in southeastern China.

Despite the high heat and humidity, her caretakers had dressed her in two layers, and when I peeled back her sweaty clothes I found the worst diaper rash I’d ever seen, and a two-inch scar at the base of her spine cutting through the red bumps and peeling skin.

The next day, when the Chinese government would complete the adoption, also was Natalie’s first birthday. We had a party for her that night, attended by families we’d met and representatives of the adoption agency, and Natalie licked cake frosting from my finger. But we worried about a rattle in her chest, and there was the scar, so afterward my husband, Matt, asked our adoption agency to send the doctor.

We had other concerns, too. Natalie was thin and pale and couldn’t sit up or hold a bottle. She had only two teeth, barely any hair and wouldn’t smile. But I had anticipated such things. My sister and two brothers were adopted from Nicaragua, the boys as infants, and when they came home they were smelly, scabies-covered diarrhea machines who could barely hold their heads up. Yet those problems soon disappeared.

I believed Natalie would be fine, too. There was clearly a light on behind those big dark eyes. She rested her head against my chest in the baby carrier and would stare up at my face, her lips parting as she leaned back, as if she knew she was now safe.

Bathroom weeds

Apparently there are weeds growing out of a floor drain in a ladies restroom here at work. Would you use Draino in a case like this or Roundup?

Shasta!

Cases and cases of it. You know, my mother wanted to name me Shasta when I was born. It sounds pretty but I am afraid the childhood torture would have been harsh. I am not so bubbly.
